English Language Learning Program

Central CUSD 301 English Language Learning Program

Central CUSD 301 is committed to providing a high quality English Language Learning (ELL) program that values a student’s native language, culture, and background knowledge to accelerate the acquisition of linguistic, academic, and social/cultural success in a diverse society. Currently the ELL program in Central CUSD 301 serves students from over 26 different language backgrounds.

Our Mission

The mission of the Central CUSD 301 English Language Learning Program is to enable students to become College and Career Ready within a nurturing environment which encourages all students to become life-long learners.

Our Vision

All students who transition from the ELL program will meet or exceed achievement standards in general education classes.

Our Services

Initial Assessment

When students first register for school, each family completes a Home Language Survey. If another language is spoken at home and/or the student speaks another language, one of the ELL teachers in the school will assess the student's English language proficiency level. The language proficiency level will be assessed in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing using the WIDA MODEL or the W-APT screener which will then be used to determine a composite score.

Based on the English proficiency level attained, the student may qualify for participation in the ELL program. If a student does qualify, parents will be notified in writing within 10 days.

Parent Notification

Each year, parents will be notified whether their child will continue to qualify for ELL services. This notification will be provided both in English and the home/native language. At any point in this process, parents have the right to decline recommended services for their child. To waive services, parents must provide written intent to withdraw their student from ELL services to the ELL teacher at their child’s school.

Annual Assessment

All students who qualify for ELL services are assessed annually to determine if they will continue to qualify for these services during the following academic year. Students are assessed using the state-mandated ACCESS for ELLs assessment. If an ELL student receives a 4.2/6.0 in reading and writing as well as a 5.0/6.0 overall composite score on the ACCESS test, this student will no longer be eligible to receive ELL services and will be exited from the ELL program. Parents will be notified of their child’s ACCESS for ELLs assessment scores each year.

All students who exit the ELL program will be monitored by their building ELL teacher for two academic years following their exit date.

Interpretations and Translations

A priority of Central CUSD 301 is to ensure that full access of information is available to all parents and school community members including those who speak languages other than or in addition to English. The district provides interpretation for parents in need of these services.
